SB 1147: This bill is still at the AZ House of Representatives with not much movement since last week. Of note are proposed amendments to monitor and consider voicing your opinion:
– Requiring an unprecedented unanimous vote of the Pima County Board of Supervisors to refer a county excise tax for transportation to the ballot for voters to decide. No other county has this requirement.
– Option for Pima County to refer up to a 1-cent excise (sales) tax to voters had been reduced to 1/2-cent.
– Requirements that 60% of funding be used for state highway construction and maintenance (which would be difficult to meet in Southern Arizona for locally-identified road projects)
– Disallowing reduction of vehicle lane miles for installation of light rail (either requiring further, even more costly widening, or eliminates some potential routes), and possible elimination of future expenditures on light rail after 2022 (currently affects Phoenix metro area, and could set precedent for elsewhere in the state)
